Commercial development in Oak Cliff is rapidly rising
Commercial development in Oak Cliff is rapidly rising because of the constant dedication to the community and to Dallas from leaders like Ed Oakley. Areas that were once empty lots or abandoned buildings are becoming viable retail centers. This is great news for the people of Oak Cliff. Years ago you had to travel south or go north across the trinity to find many major retailers, but those days seem to fading into the past. Councilman Oakley helped to build the coalitions needed to bring about great economic development.
Pinnacle Park on I30 is booming. The Wal Mart came first closely followed by a Lowes and Best Buy as well as many other smaller retailers. Along with the retail came the restaurants including Chili’s, Golden Corral, Starbucks, Taco Cabana and others. North of I30 a development is in its first stages. Conn’s and Staples are both going in there as well as an IHOP. There are spaces that will be soon filled as more retailers catch on to the need for commercial development in this area.
Last year Carnival Food Stores launched a flagship store in South Oak Cliff at Westmoreland and Illinois. It is in the center of a huge shopping center that has quickly filled with retailers. Melrose clothing store has a location there along with Payless Shoe Source and Dental Dreams, a neighborhood dentistry office. There are many other small stores and restaurants that are taking advantage of the draw that Carnival is bringing. One of these is another Oak Cliff Starbucks. Without much fanfare Starbucks opened its doors for business in its third Oak Cliff freestanding location (the others are at the above mentioned Pinnacle Park and one on Camp Wisdom).
North Oak Cliff is seeing its share of budding development. Ft Worth Avenue has seen some positive growth in the past few years. North Oak Cliff got its first Home Depot when it opened for business on Ft Worth Avenue a few years ago. The Belmont Hotel on the corner of Sylvan and Ft Worth Avenue has become a local hot spot for trendy Oak Cliff residents. It also has rooms with some of the best views of Downtown. The same people who opened the Belmont are working on their own luxury housing development right next door to the hotel. Across the street Salon Las Americas is close to being finished. It will be an upscale event location for meetings and parties.
Commercial development is definitely on the rise in this part of Dallas, as well as many others. Ed Oakley's ability to build coalitions and his dedication to economic development have aided projects such as these greatly. Stong leadership and a clear vision for Dallas is what makes Ed Oakley the right candidate for Mayor.
